President's Report - Semester One, 2006

We’ve been back at uni for half a semester, and what a half it’s been! Our year got off to a great start with a huge number of new members signing up on market day.

Our kick-off event saw us pile onto two buses to be driven around Canberra for a moonlight bus-crawl! It was a great night for all those on board - with the bus taking us to Dickson, Kingston, Phillip and Civic. It was fabulous to see many new faces on the buses!

The Purim party that we held at the Holy Grail in civic was also a crazy night - heaps of new and old faces there! With an open-theme, it was great to see people get really creative with their costumes. Prizes went to Rachel Blatt for her super-sexy wonder-woman get-up, and to Rami, who received most appropriate costume (as none other than the boy who never grows up).

Also, this year has seen the establishment of Maccabi ACT sports teams. Good luck to all those playing! We know you’ll do us proud!

We look forward to seeing all those who are in town for the holidays at the community Seder, and our up-coming yeast-feast.

Keep an eye out for the events coming in the second half of the semester. With HAW (Holocaust Awareness Week) and Yom Haazmaut approaching, the term is bound to be a great one!

Cheers,

Judy

President's Report - Semester One, 2005

AUJS Canberra's been extremely active since the beginning of the uni semester. We had a massive bar night with 20 new members signing up in March helping us to surpass the 100 mark. Our Purim BBQ and Megillah reading in Union Court at ANU was organised by our Social Officer Neal and we also put on a fantastic Purim spiel starring AUJS members, written and directed by Rami.

Our post Pesach Yeast Feast (also organised by Neal) was highly successful with about 40 people showing up at various times throughout the evening. Our Yom Ha'Shoah event at ANU was intimate and well supported by the AUJS students and the local Jewish community service involved seven Exec members in a variety of roles including speaking, singing, candle lighting and MC'ing.

On May 8th, 15 members went Go Karting including Hineni aged kids, as part of our effort to incorporate the younger generations in the community. Amelia, Cecilia, James and Ronnie have all volunteered their time with the Sunday school kids and we have six people who will be doing the Courage to Care exhibition training. In the meantime, we're all working on some of next semester's events such as PTS and a back to school 'Casino Night'.

Ian has designed a website for AUJS Canberra that is linked to the National website and is doing extremely with more than 900 hits since April. Cecilia has organised a budget that will allow us a $65 subsidy for Winter Conference which, at present, 15 people intend on coming to.

Most of the Exec attended the Yom Ha'Atzmaut cocktail party that the Israeli embassy hosted in May and a number of members also served as wait staff and hosts for the National Council of Jewish Women's 50th Anniversary last week on June 18th.

Overall the year to date has been very successful with many new members getting involved and a high level of commitment from those who are in the Exec. Unfortunately our UC campus could not affiliate for Semester 1, but we will renew our efforts for Semester 2 and focus on using this lack of affiliation to become political active on campus.

July brings both simcha and sadness. Firstly, we wish two members, Ian and Amanda, a hearty Mazel Tov on their upcoming wedding. Sadly though, another member of our group leaves us to return to Israel. We wish Roni the very best of luck and want her to know how much we'll miss her. Come back soon Roni but not before we can crash at your place next time we're in Tel Aviv.

Shalom everyone. Keep safe and well everyone and good luck with the next semester.

We have also offered our services for a number of NCJW events and have six people who will be doing the Courage to Care exhibition training.

James is already working on some of the next semester’s events such as PTS and a back to school ‘Shabbatana Mexicana’.

On the administrative side: Ian has designed a website for Canberra AUJS that has been linked to the National website and Cecilia has organised a budget that will allow us a subsidy for Winter Conference to which, at present, 15 people intend to come to.

This Wednesday (25th May), the AUJS Canberra Exec will be attending a (belated) Yom Ha’Atzmaut cocktail party put on by the Israeli Embassy.
